Sitting in the middle of some of the roughest Australian waters, Bass Strait, and located part way between the states of Victoria and Tasmania, is King Island. Home to just 1500 locals, incredible seafood and breathtaking coastline, this little isle is one of Australia’s undiscovered gems.

Just a short 45-minute flight away, you can enjoy a visit as a day trip or indulge in a multi-day stay.

How do I get there?

Scheduled flights depart from a few locations in Victoria (Moorabbin, Essendon, Tullamarine, Barwon Heads and Hamilton) and Tasmania (Launceston and Burnie), making this remote island destination surprisingly easy get to. There is also the option of flying privately in your very own aircraft to suit your itinerary. Would you prefer a helicopter or a jet?

Check out the King Island Tourism website for further information on how to travel to King Island.

A Little Island with a Lot of Options!

There is so much to do! Golfers, surfers, and foodies will especially love this relaxed and quiet island.
• Boasting three golf courses, two of them (Cape Wickham and Ocean Dunes) are amongst the world’s best. A day on the green is often the reason for a visit to King Island.
• Catching a wave at Martha Lavinia is a surfer’s dream with some of the best breaks in the world on the north eastern side of the island.
• Several festivals are held on King Island each year including the insatiable Long Table Festival – a foodie’s heaven, the King Island Cup held each September – the “horse-racing event that logistically should not have survived 123 years”, and the popular summer music Festival of King Island draws crowds of rather a decent size for such a small location
• Currie is the main King Island township where you will find most of the cafés, restaurants, and boutique stores, set on a pretty boat harbour with amazing views of the Southern Ocean. On the eastern side of King Island, protected from the harsh westerly winds, is the quaint coastal village of Grassy – also island’s main port. Now popular with a small community of sea-changers and creatives, it was once a thriving mining town. Make sure to visit Grassy for excellent fishing and diving at offshore shipwreck sites.
• If you venture to Grassy Harbour at dusk you may be lucky to see the nightly occurrence of little penguins waddling ashore, returning to their burrows.
• Cape Wickham Lighthouse is Australia’s tallest lighthouse at 48 metres tall. Established in 1861 its intention was to warn boats of nearby danger rather than to guide them in to shore safely. King Island has a treacherous history of shipwrecking and many King Islanders are descendants of survivors.
• Well known for its beef, King Island farmland is verdant and idyllic, and is a great place to learn about the ‘paddock to plate’ experience. A Meat Your Beef farm tour will teach you all about life on a farm and what goes on behind the scenes prior to that delicious steak arriving on your plate.
• If ocean fishing takes your fancy, you will be in unspoilt territory. Why not even catch your next meal on a deep-sea fishing charter?

The Finest of Foods

Bountiful fresh produce can be found on the island, including some of Australia’s freshest seafood, and highest quality beef and cheese.
Imagine the endless brie, camembert, cheddar, and blue cheese you can sample at the award-winning Kind Island Dairy. Your cheese platter can be accompanied with a wine or a beer, too!
The King Island Bakehouse has put a spin on the traditional meat pie and is known for their crayfish pies. Give it a go!
Collect a little picnic, and head to the ‘restaurant with no food’. The Currie Boathouse is a quirky little café on the water – with no food, and no staff. Take advantage of the harbour views while dining on the delicious produce you have gathered during your exploration of the island. Remember to take with you all that you bring along – rubbish especially. King Island is a ‘leave no trace’ tourism destination.

Where do I stay?

With such rugged coastline, staying in a luxury lodge with large floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the ocean is the most magical setting for your overnight visit. Imagine sitting by the fire with a glass of wine, relaxing, watching the sun set and the waves crash ashore.
However, there are many other cosy options such as B&Bs and hotels to stay at and extend your time on the island.
Particularly impressive are Taraki Lodge and Kittawa Lodge, and the King Island accommodation listings have further options available.

Wine, vino, wijn, pútáojiǔ, wein – however you say it, cultures across the world love a good one, and what better way to enjoy it than by going straight to the source!
Victoria has some exquisite wine, and two popular grape-growing regions are only a short one-hour drive from Melbourne, meaning that lovely glass of Pinot Noir is not far away.

As travel restrictions ease now is an exciting time to start planning the best wine tasting day trip for you and your friends. Now, do you choose to visit the Yarra Valley or Mornington Peninsula? Or do you travel further to the splendour of the King Valley, the Victorian Pyrenees or Rutherglen regions?

The Yarra Valley is perhaps Australia’s most easily accessible wine region, and for this reason it is also one of the most visited. The cool climate terroir means that there is high quality production of chardonnay, point noir and sparkling wine, and with over 70 wineries, there are plenty of corks to pop. A few big names call the valley home including household names like Domaine Chandon and Rochford, as well as premier boutique vineyards like Mount Mary and Yeringberg. The culinary prowess of names like Oakridge and TarraWarra are also drawcards to the area. New and renovated cellar doors are continuously calling back repeat visitors and the bustling hub of Healesville is a replete with wine rooms, breweries, cafes and cellar doors.

Situated amongst bushland and surrounded by beautiful coastline and beaches, the Mornington Peninsula wine region is a very picturesque destination, especially with a glass of wine in hand. Visit one of the dozens of smaller-scale wineries, and mix up your day with activities ranging from soaking in natural hot springs, golf, boating, coastal hiking or even horseback riding.

The Bellarine Peninsula is located across Port Phillip Bay, directly opposite the Mornington Peninsula. With magnificent views and a smaller number of wineries, this region is often much quieter with a relaxed seaside buzz. Located about an hour and a half from Melbourne it is easily done as a day trip.

Further afield lies the King Valley. What was once farmland used to grow tobacco by Italian, Yugoslav and Spanish migrants until it was outlawed, is the prized locale of many wineries – and what stunning vineyards they are. Prosecco, montepulciano and sangiovese are well-known in this area, keeping alive the region’s Italian heritage. About a 3-hour drive from Melbourne, the King Valley is a great spot to overnight and explore over two- or three-day journeys.

You may have a list of places you have always wanted to visit, or you prefer us to show off our favourites. Perhaps you would like to treat yourself to a relaxed style degustation lunch with the vineyard’s top tier wines, or maybe you would prefer to stop for a light casual meal before continuing around the wine region. Special occasion? Let’s do something extravagant!
However you’d like to enjoy your day we can work with you and help make it happen.

Here are a couple of quick steps to help plan your perfect day out.

• Agree on which region you would love to visit, or let us make a recommendation based on your preferences
• Opt to be flexible and pay as you go throughout the day, or have the day arranged as an all-inclusive adventure
• Advise us of your budget
• Decide how many stops you would like to make – we can keep you updated on travel times and the amount of time you’ll be spending in the vehicle
• Determine if your day is all about wine or if you would like to visit a distillery, brewery, dairy or produce store as well
• Choose if you’d like to include being pampered somewhere such as the Peninsula Hot Springs, or be a little more active with a walk or hike
• Select what sort of dining you’d like – a simple café style lunch, or something more celebratory at a fine dining vineyard restaurant
• Let us know where you are. We’ll pick you up from your home or accommodation
• Tell us when to go!

You will enjoy a luxurious private vehicle all to yourselves, a local expert guide who loves wine just as much as you do (but will also be your designated driver) and knows the region inside-out.

Gather your family and friends as well as your appetite as you prepare to indulge in a day of wine and fresh produce set amongst the most beautiful setting.

How much of your own backyard have you explored? With cheap flights and package deals regularly popping up in front of us, often the first thing we consider for our next getaway is grabbing our passport and heading overseas.
Given the bumpy start to the year with the devastating bushfires and the global pandemic, now is the perfect time to plan your Victorian escape and ‘Holiday Here This Year’.

Aside from keeping your hard-earned dollars in Australia, you’ll be supporting local communities and businesses – especially some of those drastically affected by the bushfires too. Staying local gives you the opportunity to discover what lies just beyond your back doorstep and enjoy everything this beautiful country has to offer.

Opting to travel on a private basis allows you the freedom to plan your escape to best suit you – you’ll have a luxurious vehicle with great viewing, and a designated driver (great for wine lovers) who’ll be your own personal guide to explore all the places and attractions of interest to you. They’ll share with you their up to date relevant knowledge, and of course provide some great company.

With thousands of kilometres of the beautiful state of Victoria to explore, travel further than you have before. Regions such as Gippsland, the Grampians, Echuca and the Murray River, Mildura, and the High Country are at least a few hours’ drive from Melbourne, so are best visited for a couple of days (or longer!) while you enjoy the fresh country air. There’s no reason why you can’t take a few trips or extended weekends away, so pack your bags and let’s go! Our expert reservations team is on hand to answer your questions and help design the perfect short break.

Want to know some insightful tips about Victoria’s amazing regions? Read on!

Echuca

Located about 2.5 hours from Melbourne, Echuca sits on the Victorian Overnight on a houseboat border with New South Wales and is well known for its historic paddle steamers coasting along the mighty Murray River. What was once used as a transportation network for supplies is now a drawcard for visitors to this country town, offering short cruises and extended dining voyages.
Take the scenic route to and from Echuca and make some stops along the way at places such as Mitchelton Wines, the town of Bendigo and even Cactus Country!
There are water sports aplenty in Echuca with boating, water-skiing, fishing, and swimming easily accessible, and keeping in theme you can overnight on a houseboat or on a luxury paddle steamer.

Grampians

Ah, the Grampians – the perfect place for nature, wildlife, and hiking. A serene bush setting and abundant trails; pack some snacks and water and you can be gone for hours.
If you need a challenge, then conquer the rock walls with a morning of abseiling and rock climbing.
At dusk you are likely to spot hundreds of kangaroos near the town of Halls Gap, and hopefully some emus too.
If you plan to visit over a public holiday long weekend it’s best to book your accommodation, including campgrounds, well in advance. Being approximately 3 hours from Melbourne means that many visitors choose to overnight in this peaceful region and make the most of their getaway.
It’s not all about hiking and waterfalls though. Some fantastic vineyard cellar doors and local produce growers are a short drive away where you’ll be able to sample and purchase some goodies during your travels. Venture a little further north to the Victorian Pyrenees and you’ll encounter a whole other region of natural beauty and remarkable wine – one that not many others know about.

Silo Art Trail

Stretching over 200 kilometres a little north of the Grampians, the Silo Art Tail is a collection of murals painted on 30+ metre high grain silos illustrated by a variety of artists. The journey from the first to last silo takes Travel the Silo Art Trail approximately 2 hours, so if you are visiting from Melbourne, plan to stay overnight part way in one of the small towns on the silo route. Otherwise this is a fabulous day trip from the Grampians.
Read about the individual stories, artists, and their work here.

Not too far from the final silo on the trail is Lake Tyrrell, Victoria’s largest salt lake. However, it is often dry in summer and doesn’t have more than 5 centimetres of water in winter. If you visit at the right time of the day, between July and October, you may be able to capture some stunning reflective photos. It’s also on the way to Mildura from Melbourne so if you’re visiting The Mallee on your next adventure be sure to make a stop.

High Country

Victoria’s High Country is one of the ultimate getaway destinations given its generous offerings; wineries, breweries, produce, boutique shopping, cycling and mountain biking, hiking and some of the most picturesque scenery. Just under 3 hours from Melbourne there are multiple towns and areas to explore and spend time – and you could easily stay a few days, or more, here.
Check out our blog and tour page for info and inspo.

Gippsland

Gippsland is a road tripper’s delight, and a huge pocket of Victoria to travel around. Unfortunately, it was one of the areas of Australia that was devastated by bushfires earlier this year, however do not let that deter you – it’s brimming with positivity and all the fun things you could ask for.
Wilsons Promontory National Park is around 3 hours from Melbourne and visited by campers, hikers, and surfers alike. It stretches along the southern-most tip of mainland Australia and its spectacular coastline and views keep outdoor-lovers happy for hours (and sometimes days!). Trek to Mount Oberon Summit, make some noise as you walk along aptly named Squeaky Beach, or tackle the sand dunes of Big Drift. Take a boat cruise in the Prom’s surrounding waters and keep an eye out for seals, dolphins, and if it’s the right time of year, whales. You’ll journey past monstrous rock formations including Skull Rock as well as inlets and islands. Make a stop at a secluded beach for a stroll and a refreshing swim.
Holiday makers regularly flock further through the region to East Gippsland towns such as Lakes Entrance and Mallacoota, about 4 and 6 hours from Melbourne, respectively. You can easily fill your days swimming, hiking, kayaking, cycling, boating, fishing, golfing, and indulging in fresh local seafood or dining at a waterside café.
National Parks in this section of the state are vast, with impressive scenery and plenty to encounter. Parks such as Tarra Bulga and Croajingolong can be trekked, paddled, picnicked and caved.
As this region starts to reopen to visitors, it’s well worth a trip to support local businesses and discover some of the most untouched parts of Victoria.

Big Drift Wilsons Promontory Main Beach at Lakes Entrance

Mildura and Wentworth

One of the furthest towns from Melbourne, almost 6 hours away, is Mildura. It lies downstream along the Murray River from Echuca, almost at the South Australian border, and is an established grape and orange farming region. Picnic spots line the town’s riverbanks, houseboats docked by the shoreline accommodate visitors to this rural city, and kayakers, boaters, and water skiers navigate the nation’s most famous river. Mildura also takes pride in its impressive gastronomic scene, including The Province by Matt De Angelo, as well as the two chef-hatted restaurant, Stefano’s.
Half an hour across the border into New South Wales is the town of Wentworth, where two major rivers, the Murray and Darling, meet. Like Mildura and Echuca, it was bustling with paddle steamers back in the early 1900s, but you can still see them today and jump on board a short cruise.
A little over an hour from here is the UNESCO Word Heritage listed Mungo National Park, with its dry lakes, archaeological remains, and sand dunes that have been formed by erosion. Tour through by vehicle, or if you’re feeling energetic cruise along the cycling tail throughout the park. Night-owls can enjoy the park on a sunset or even a full-moon tour!
Spend a few days in the sparse north western part of the state, bursting with outdoor activities, water sports and relaxing time with family and friends.

These are only a few of many places in Victoria to add to your ever-growing travel bucket list. So, the next time you think of taking a holiday or a short escape, stay local, discover and support more of Victoria and Australia than you ever have before.

For experienced snow-lovers or first-timers, the Victorian alpine regions have a little something for everyone. With the winter months in sight and easing of social distancing restrictions on the horizon, now is the time to start planning your snowy getaway or regional short break.

Victoria has four popular snow resorts; Lake Mountain, Mount Buller, Mount Hotham and Falls Creek, and each has something fun to offer. There are activities galore and endless options to choose from, so how can you enjoy your time on the mountain as much as possible? Travelling on a private tour means you can tailor your days perfectly to suit you and the entire family. The first question is – what do you want to do?
From tobogganing and snowboarding to dog sledding, snow shoeing to fat biking – whatever adventure you are after we can make it happen.

Lake Mountain

Lake Mountain is located about 2 hours from Melbourne and is the closest resort to the city. It is a perfect day trip destination for first-timers, kids, and the whole family. The drive through the Black Spur on the way to the mountain is a magical one. Misty mornings, winding roads, hairpin turns, tall Mountain Ash trees and lush ferns make the journey pleasantly scenic. A stop at Steavenson Falls, just outside the quaint town of Marysville, will take you along an easy trail to the bottom of the waterfall where you’ll find the refreshing water cascading down from over 120 metres above.
At the top of Lake Mountain toboggan runs and snow play will keep everyone entertained all day. Once you have built your snowman it’s time to get a little more active with some cross-country skiing. Trek through the snow-covered trees and enjoy exploring at your own pace. Warm up on the way home with a stop at the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie for one of their delicious hot chocolates!

Mount Buller

If you want a little more adrenaline, visit Mount Buller for skiing and snowboarding. It’s the closest downhill skiing destination to Melbourne to carve up the slopes on either a day trip or multi-day stay.

The fully equipped village offers everything you’ll need for your snowy getaway, from rental equipment, bars and restaurants, supermarket, post office, shuttle service, day spa, as well as a multitude of on-mountain accommodation options.
Animal lovers will absolutely revel in the opportunity to go dog-sledding. Relish the moment where you get up close to the huskies for the perfect photo, then let them take you along the picturesque trails on the mountain, past snow-laden eucalypts and views of the ranges. If you’re lucky you may even be able to have a go at driving your own paw-powered team.

Snow play and tobogganing at Lake Mountain
Dog sledding through the snow
Mount Hotham

Heading to Mount Hotham? The highest ski village in Victoria has many accommodation options to consider, so why not try something a little different and unique? Overnight in an igloo or a snowdome! They’re cosier than you think and kept warm with a wood fire heater.
Spend your days skiing or snowboarding some of the mountain’s 70+ runs. If you need something to occupy the kids there is a snow park just for them, loaded with all sorts of fun things to keep them happy – snowball throwers, snow castle and snowman moulds, toboggans, and snowmobiles!

Falls Creek

Adventure is right at your doorstep of the ski in-ski out resort of Falls Creek. Aside from all the action of skiing, snowboarding, 65km of cross-country trails and snow play, you can jump on a fatbike (a specially equipped mountain bike with oversized tyres perfect for riding on snow) and cycle across a network of groomed cross-country ski trails. Make sure you give way to the skiers though.

Grab a drink and sit by the fire

If the 90 downhill ski runs at Falls Creek are not enough, on bluebird days you can take a helicopter (yes, a helicopter!) to Mount Hotham (and vice versa) and take advantage of exploring more mountainous terrain. Whiz back in the afternoon and kick your feet up as you cruise down the mountain in a tube at the Snow Tube Park.

Top off an exhilarating snow day sitting by the crackling fire with a crisp beer, mulled wine or hot chocolate, and unwind. A perfect end to an action-packed getaway.

Whatever the reason for your trip to the snow, join us as we explore the snowy mountains in stunning parts of the state in search of fresh powder and an adrenaline rush.

Now, what do you want to do on your snow trip?

Turning of the leaves in autumn

AU Private Tours High Country Bright in autumn

Fresh air, burnt-orange leaves, sweeping plains, and rugged mountainous backdrops. Travelling through Victoria’s High Country in autumn is magical. As the trees turn stunning colours in anticipation of the coming cooler months it is a perfect time to visit.

This region is one of the state’s gems and lesser known by international visitors, but certainly one to add to the list. There is a wealth of things to see, do and eat, and what better way to explore this section of Victoria than on a private tour? If time permits take two or more days and really make the most of what is on offer in this pocket of the country.

As you make your way up the Hume Highway from Melbourne, stop in at the town of Glenrowan and learn about the infamous bushranger, Ned Kelly. There’s a statue of him in the centre of town – you can’t miss it.

The fertile soil of King Valley means crops are plentiful. The area was once planted with tobacco farms for many years by Italian, Yugoslav and Spanish migrants who settled here after World War II. Tobacco eventually became outlawed and the farms are now producing grapes on its numerous vineyards. Sip on a glass of wine overlooking the golden vines, or you may like to delve deeper and meet a wine maker who will show you the tricks of the trade as you learn about the produce, processes and equipment used, resulting in a perfect drop.

Perfect for a picnic

Milawa Cheese 2

In the surrounding towns, such as Milawa, you will find small providores showcasing their delicious produce; cheese, mustard, nuts and olives, just to name a few. Stock up on some goodies during your travels to create your own picnic later in the day.

The historic town of Beechworth is a must-visit. Once a goldminer’s delight in the 1800s is now a stunning town for a pitstop or an overnight stay. Not only is the local honey delectable, the bakery has all sorts of sweet and savoury treats, and the Beechworth Sweet Co is a sweet tooth’s dream. However, it is not all about food – the architecturally beautiful town is also surrounded by wonderful nature spots ready to be explored.

Sit by the Ovens River in the centre of Bright with your small feast enjoying the tranquil sounds of the water flowing past.
Wind down at the end of your day with a refreshing beer at the Victoria Tourism Award-winning Bright Brewery. Located in the heart of town, backing on to bushland it’s the perfect setting to relax with a pint, a tasting paddle, or even their recently revealed ‘mystery beer’!

Breathe in the fresh air and take in the views

Mountain biking Mount Hotham

The nearby alpine resorts, Mount Hotham and Falls Creek, are extremely popular during Victoria’s winter snow season but in the warmer months provides visitors abundant hiking trails with a variety of distances and gradients, and with breathtaking views.

For something a little cruisier, pick up a bike and go for a ride. Feel the fresh breeze on your face as you cycle around towns, past farmland and through bushland. The rail trail is easy riding and suitable for the whole family. However, if you are after more of an adrenaline rush then mountain biking might be the thing for you. The region has plenty of mountain bike parks for a variety of ability levels, but you may need to stop part way down to take in the spectacular scenery.

Whether you are after a relaxed journey or something faster paced, anything can be done on a private basis to guarantee you have the best possible experience in Victoria’s high country.

Safety advice and alerts for travel to Australia

Bushfires are currently affecting some parts of Australia. Like all Australians, our hearts go out to the families and communities who are impacted by the bushfires. Our gratitude for the frontline services facing the fires head on cannot be expressed deeply enough.

STAYING UP TO DATE

We encourage all travellers visiting Australia to seek the most up-to-date information for their planned itinerary prior to departure, and remain informed about changing conditions while in Australia.

Speak with your travel agent, accommodation provider, tourism operators and local Visitor Information Centres for advice about local conditions and how best to experience Australia’s tourism destinations.

Read about bushfire safety and find links to national and regional warning sites.

WILL THE BUSHFIRES AFFECT MY TRIP?

Most destinations in Australia remain safe and continue to welcome visitors. All international airports in Australia are operating as normal.

It is more important than ever to support Australian tourism providers, whether in unaffected regions or those that will recover from these bushfires in the months and years to come. The best way to support Australia, Australian communities, and the tourism sector is to keep visiting. If you cannot travel to an affected area due to bushfires, one of the many ways to help includes rescheduling instead of cancelling a planned trip to support the communities in the coming months.

WHICH AUSTRALIAN DESTINATIONS ARE IMPACTED?

Updated as at 8 January 2020

Below is a summary of some of our most popular destinations for international travellers, and whether they have been impacted by the current bushfires or are safe to visit. The list will be updated regularly, however conditions can change quickly, and travellers should seek the most up to date information from regional websites.

This is not a complete list of affected areas, so if you are travelling outside these areas, please refer to our bushfire safety page for links to regional sites.

Just 90 minutes from Melbourne lies Phillip Island. Home to pristine white beaches, stunning wildlife and hi-octane sporting events, there is endless family fun everywhere you turn. Teach your kids to swim on a quiet beach, see koalas and penguins in their natural habitats, and take in the SBK Championship in 2020. The FIM Superbike World Championship is a must-see event, and we’ll fill you in all of the fun things to take in below.

What is Phillip Island

There are plenty of reasons to plan a holiday to Phillip Island, and it’s perfect as a trip for the entire family. This small island is huge on activities for everyone. Weekend wanderers, sand-castle builders, surfers, food enthusiasts, sports enthusiasts, history buffs, people who enjoy fishing and more. Jump in the car and take a short trip from Melbourne to immerse yourself in all of the fun and excitement of Phillip Island. You’ll experience:

  • White Sand Beaches – Experience some of the best surfing anywhere in Australia. Phillip Island is Victoria’s first National Surfing Reserve, and it has four excellent locations to catch your next wave. Visit Smiths Beach, Cape Woolamai, Cat Bay or Summerland to hit small waves perfect for beginners and grommets for experienced riders.
  • Wildlife – Adorable penguins waddle up the beach and burrow into the dunes. You can take a tour of the remarkable wilderness or visit the Koala Conservation Centre. You’ll walk along wooden boardwalks, watch the Penguin Parade and see the shearwater birds arrive in the springtime.
  • Family Fun – For such a small island, it’s big when it comes to family entertainment. Start the day at the Phillip Island Chocolate Factory before burning off some of that sugar by visiting A Maze’N Things and getting lost in a maze or by playing a round of mini-golf. Finally, you can visit the Nobbies Centre and take a virtual Antarctic Journey.
  • Jazz – Music lovers unite! The Phillip Island Jazz Festival brings three days of vintage and modern jazz and swing sounds to Cowes. Come in November and see both touring and local jazz bands and immerse yourself in island sounds. Venues across the island host the late-night and sunny afternoon jazz sessions as well.

Phillip Island is Home to the FIM Superbike World Championship

High-octane sports enthusiasts will be right at home on Phillip Island all year round. Additionally, you can satisfy your need for speed any time of the year by taking a ride on a scale replica of the Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit in a go-kart.

In February, Phillip Island hosts the WSBK Phillip Island or World Superbikes Championship. Beginning on the 28th February and running to the 1st March 2020, the best riders in the world will compete for the title of Champion.

This event features several rounds of races held on a world-class permanent racing facility. Each series consists of two full-length motorcycle races, and the Superpole race is another ten-lap sprint. The other three races combine to crown a Championship for manufacturers and a crown for riders.

Friday kicks off the World Superbikes on Phillip Island festivities with the first free practice followed by the first qualifying race. Saturday has the second qualifying race and second free practice. The times on the first and second qualifying race combine, and the 15 fastest times qualify the riders for the Superpole race.

All other riders will receive a grid position starting time. These riders compete in a Knockout session, and every session is 12 minutes long. The first round has 15 riders with the slowest three eliminated. The second round has 12 riders, and the slowest three removed, and the final nine have to set the best times possible in each Superpole race they participate in.

Riders have to complete their lap with a time that is no longer than 107% of the first pole-position rider’s time to make it into the finale. Winners will advance to the finale on Sunday, and two champions will take home the title.

Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix Comes to Phillip Island in October

On 25 October 2020, the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix comes to Phillip Island. This annual event brings electrifying crowds and a thrilling atmosphere that will keep you entertained throughout the race. Over 86,000 people attend this event, and you’ll take in some of the biggest names in motorcycle racing battling it out for the championship title.

There are multiple practice rounds to take in, dozens of fun events and chances to get up close and personal to your favourite riders. You can bring the whole family and visit food galleries, merchandise stands, a kids’ corner and more.

Why WSBK on Phillip Island and the Yearly Sporting Events Are so Popular

These events are so much more than races; they’re experiences. World-class teams compete in an electric atmosphere that starts from the second you step onto the island until you leave. Another reason these events are so popular is that they’re family-friendly. There is something for everyone, and people of all ages can come and have a blast from start to finish.

Hundreds of thousands of people make the journey to Phillip Island each year to take in the AUS superbikes in this picture-perfect location. Along with the sporting events, there are dozens of other things to see and do, as we outlined earlier. All of these things combine to create a must-see occasion for the entire family.

Plan a Private Tour for the SBK Championship, 2020

What better way to take in the FIM Superbike World Championship than a private tour? Additionally, you don’t have to restrict your private tours to Phillip Island. Instead, make a multi-day event of it and book trips to the surrounds. You’ll be back to Phillip Island with plenty of time to see the World Superbikes Championship. A few tour ideas include:

  • Melbourne – Since Melbourne is just 90 minutes outside of the island, you can schedule a day tour here before the hi-octane action begins on Phillip Island. See all of the fantastic sights while experiencing Melbourne’s international appeal. Melbourne is a city packed with sports, culture and cuisine, and a private tour allows you to find all of the small hidden gems in the area.
  • Great Ocean RoadThe trip to Great Ocean Road allows you to take in some of the most stunning scenery in Australia, and a private tour will wind you through all of the best locations. You’ll see natural landscapes beautifully mixed with the culture of the region, and there are several tours to try. Presidents Cup Returns To Melbourne in 2019

The President’s Cup is a biennial men’s golfing event where 12 of America’s top professional golf players face off against an international team with players selected from other countries, not including Europe. Outside of the four majors, the President’s Cup – created and organised by the PGA Tour – is one of the most highly anticipated golf events in the world.

And this year, it returns to the Royal Melbourne Golf Club for the third time in its illustrious history. In the 13th edition of this prestigious event, South African Ernie Els will be captaining the international team, while the US team will be led by Tiger Woods, who is also the youngest captain the event has ever seen.

Featuring a match play format where holes count rather than strokes played, the President’s Cup this year is sure to bring a surge of excitement to the gentlemen’s game when long-time PGA Tour rivals Els and Woods pit their teams against each other. Only time will tell if Woods’ age and his controversial decision to name himself as one of four wildcard selections will topple the US team from their throne and give the international team their long fought for second victory.

While there are some who won’t want to miss a moment of the four-day event, taking place from 9 December to 15 December, there are those who prefer to only watch the singles matches which happen on the last day. And seeing as you may have travelled several hours to spectate or participate in some other role at this prestigious event, you may as well take advantage and explore a little more of the sporting capital of Australia (hosting other major sport events such Australian Open).

Other Events to Enjoy in December 2019

Queen Victoria Summer Night Market

The largest open-air market in the Southern Hemisphere and listed on the Victorian Heritage Register, the Queen Victoria Market is an iconic Melbourne landmark. And, from 27 November 2019 until 11 March 2020, they’ll be hosting Melbourne’s original and favourite night market every Wednesday evening.

With 130 stalls to explore, you’ll find street food vendors serving up everything from African barbecue to American-style loaded dessert waffles. The highlight of this season’s night market is the Palm Springs Bar, a pop-up bar where gigantic pink flamingos, desert plants, and delightfully fruity summertime cocktails will abound.

The Queen Vic Market isn’t all about food and drink though, you’ll also find stalls selling stunning local art, the latest fashion, stylish homewares, and general knick-knacks. Each week in December will also feature a number of live performances ranging from a community choir to a fingerpicking solo guitar player.

Our Taste the Queen Victoria Market private tour is usually a day time activity, but we’re happy to adjust it so you can enjoy this multicultural hub located in the heart of Melbourne after play has closed for the day.

Meredith Music Festival

Held in the Supernatural Amphitheatre, a natural bowl located on a private farm, the Meredith Music Festival began its 29-year journey as a casual get together for a few hundred friends.

Having featured performances by The Avalanches, John Butler Trio, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, MGMT, Something For Kate, and The Cat Empire over the years, it’s no wonder the festival has become so popular over the years.

And with Irish pop sensation Róisín Murphy and German DJ Helena Hauff, known for her stripped-down techno and electronic tracks, headlining this year’s event, you can expect something for music fans of all kinds from all around Australia and beyond.

Getting tickets to this “1-off, 2-night, 3-day, 4-dimensional eucalyptic extravaganza, handmade for humans, in the Supernaturallest Amphitheatre on Earth” being held from 13-15 December can be tricky but it’s a wonderful experience for the younger crowds who may be visiting Melbourne during the President’s Cup.

Dinner and a Show

As the favourite foodie destination in Australia and with strong theatre roots, Melbourne loves to combine the two with its famous theatrical restaurants. While the wildly popular Dracula’s closed its doors in 2017, there are still several dinner theatres where you can enjoy a live performance while indulging in a five-star meal.

The Titanic Theatre based in Williamstown which “sails” every Friday and Saturday night during December is a Melbourne institution. Featuring a two-part musical performed while a three-course dinner is served, the show is an engaging and interactive night that ends with the Carpathian coming to save everyone and deliver them to a night of dancing in New York.

Featuring a humorously kitschy Halloween themed interactive dinner experience, the Witches Britches show is a popular night out for Melbournians. High-quality bistro-style food is served while talented actors and actresses entertain you with cheeky pop culture references and plenty of adult laughs, and is another dinner and show followed by a DJ-hosted disco.

American Express Openair Cinemas

Called Melbourne’s playground by the sea, St Kilda is a popular destination for some of the best summertime water activities – such as windsurfing and paddleboarding. But from 22 November until 20 December the South Beach Reserve will also be hosting a cinematic experience that is a little outside of the ordinary.

With a selection of recent box office hits such as Ad Astra and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, along with long-time favourites such as Love Actually and a number of local films, the American Express Openair Cinema offers an evening of relaxed entertainment underneath the stars.

The Italian masters from Ladro will be serving up their modern Italian dishes with a local twist and every evening’s curated menu is complemented by 4Pines beer, Pimms aperitifs and a selection of Giesen Wines. Make a day of it and start the fun with one of our many popular private tours, then head to St Kilda to enjoy the movie before we take you back to your luxury accommodation at the Grand Hyatt Melbourne.
